PNJ in the eye of the diamond storm: panic or a chance to look closer?

Stock locked at floor price, sell orders piling up with zero buyers, down more than 30% from this year's high — read the numbers alone and you'd think PNJ has a real business problem.

Look closer at the actual case, and the story sits somewhere else entirely.

The bust involves a smuggling ring moving over 28,000 diamonds, tied to Đặng Ngọc Thảo, Director of P-Lab — PNJ's testing and certification arm. The key detail: the smuggled diamonds came from India through Hong Kong, while PNJ sources its diamonds through official import channels from Thailand and Hong Kong. Two separate supply chains that never cross. P-Lab itself has no trading function — it only provides certification services. The relationship between PNJ and P-Lab is a service contract, not a buy-sell arrangement. In plain terms, none of those 28,000 diamonds ever entered PNJ's retail sales system.

The real issue here is trust in the certification stamp — not the diamonds PNJ is actually selling.

Operationally, the company has activated its crisis-management unit and is reviewing internal procedures. Customers coming in to sell back, re-verify, or exchange are all being accommodated — foot traffic peaked on day one, dropped on day two, and by day four was back to near-normal levels. Buyback inventory rose temporarily but remains within manageable limits, and the company has already folded this stock into its rolling forecast to move it during the year-end peak season — wedding season, Tết, and holiday shopping.

On the earnings side, Q2 2026 is still being closed out and internally audited. Preliminary figures still track the original plan: double-digit growth, with the jewelry segment staying positive. The full-year 2026 target remains unchanged, on the reasoning that this crisis doesn't touch the company's core fundamentals and has already been adequately contained. The share buyback plan, already approved by shareholders, remains on the table for the board to activate if needed.

A limit-down reaction is a natural reflex to a shocking headline. But a serious investor has to separate two different questions: is this an individual legal risk, or a business-model risk? Right now, the evidence leans toward the former.

One detail still worth watching: Thảo is the younger brother of Đặng Thị Lài, a PNJ board member who also serves as the company's authorized representative at P-Lab. The governance link between the parent company and its certification arm isn't as distant as some are framing it — this is a thread investors should keep tracking, not one to draw conclusions from yet.

Is today's floor price an opportunity, or a trap set by a story that hasn't finished unfolding? That answer probably has to wait for the Q2 audit and how far the investigation expands.
